No “Liver” for MOCA
MOCA plunged back in the loan exhibition business this past weekend with the opening of the Philadelphia-organized "Arshile Gorsky: A Retrospective." One major work in the Philadelphia show didn't make it to L.A.: The Liver is the Cock's Comb (above). Its owner, Buffalo's Albright-Knox Art Gallery, didn't extend the loan. Andre Breton called Liver "the most important picture done in America" (i.e., by anybody). It's particularly missed because MOCA owns (and is showing) the preparatory drawing, a bequest of Marcia Weisman (below).
