LACMA Is Given a Zhu Jinshi "Wave"

LACMA and the University of Chicago's Smart Museum of Art have been given joint ownership of Zhu Jinshi's Wave of Materials (2007/2019), now on view in the Resnick Pavilion. Wave is composed of 8000 crumpled sheets of xuan paper, the type used for traditional Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. The work is a gift of the artist and Pearl Lam Galleries, in honor of Smart curator Wu Hung, who organized the traveling exhibition "The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China." That will open in BCAM June 2 and run through Jan. 5, 2020.

Chinese contemporary art is gaining new visibility in U.S. museums. The gift follows LACMA's recent purchase of a monumental painting by Zeng Fanzhi (that will be in "Allure of Matter") and signing of a collection-sharing agreement with Budi Tek's Yuz Museum, Shanghai.

At least that artwork's display won't require the pounding of nails/hangers into concrete walls. So to all the Christopher Knights and others of LA, no need to fret or worry.

Michael Govan has everything under control.
