Underground Museum Is Closing "Until Further Notice"

On Instagram Karon Davis says that the Underground Museum and its Noah Davis exhibition will be closing "until further notice." The announcement implies that the UM will survive but "We simply do not have any answers right now." 

"Noah Davis," curated by Helen Molesworth and Justen Leroy, had been scheduled to run through Sep. 30, 2022. At top, the UM's new purple lucite gallery seating.

I feel bad for the community. But free-admission museums are tricky for the long term. The Cleveland Museum is always free, for example, but they have more money than god.
I noted that on the UM web site there appears to be no permanent collection, also tricky if survival depends on deep-pocket donors. They may thinks it's a fly by night outfit.
Broad and Getty charge buckets [either at the door or the garage]. Why can't they bring UM and other venues a lifeline? Any hunger for civic fame among rich Angelino artlings?

At least the Govan-Zumthor County Museum of Art isn't hurting for money. But they are seeking a donation of draperies. Lots of draperies.

The LACMA trolls on this blog are doing a real disservice to the LA community. An amazing place is closing and two amazing people have lost their job and the immediate reaction is to ignore what they have just read and instead bash LACMA and Govan. The Underground museum was truly a jewel and I hope that everyone involved is able to take the time to heal.

Admission fees are not the issue. On average, admissions cover only 6% of the budget in American museums.
