Transcendental Painters Take the Spotlight

Raymond Jonson, Oil No. 2, 1942. Crocker Art Museum
LACMA will survey the New Mexico-based Transcendental Painting Group in an exhibition this winter. Of the group's offbeat abstractionists Agnes Pelton has lately been the subject of museum shows and acquisitions, while Lawren Harris had a Steve Martin-co-curated show at the Hammer in 2015. The LACMA exhibition will present these artists in the context of under-recognized peers such as Raymond Jonson, Emil Bisttram, Ed Garman, and Florence Miller Pierce.

Organized by the Crocker Art Museum, "Another World: The Transcendental Painting Group, 1938–1945" opens in Sacramento this August and will appear at LACMA Dec. 18, 2022, to Apr. 16, 2023.
