Academy Museum Revisits Studio Ghibli

The Academy Museum's first major exhibition was devoted to anime master Hayao Miyazaki (2021), and a sequel is already in the works. The motivation is a recent gift of drawings, art boards, and posters from Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. "Studio Ghibli's PONYO" will focus on Miyazaki's 2008 film about a literal fish out of water. The exhibition will contain a Studio Ghibli animation desk and "a playful, immersive environment that allows younger visitors to step into the magical oceanic world of the film."

"Studio Ghibli's PONYO" runs Feb. 14, 2016—Jan. 10, 2027.

Meanwhile, East Asia is tied to another creative (artistic too?) trend that I've read about, but, okay, goes straight over my head.

MSM, Aug 24, 2025: "Netflix just pulled off the ultimate plot twist: the streaming giant, long accused of killing the movie theater vibe, just landed its first-ever No. 1 box-office title. And the culprit: None other than the insanely buzzy KPop Demon Hunters.

Over the weekend, rival studios estimate the animated musical won the competition, raking in $16–18 million in ticket sales. Some are even whispering numbers as high as $20 million.

Here’s the kicker: this victory lap came after “KPop Demon Hunters” already dominated Netflix’s charts for weeks. The streamer then dropped it into 1,750 theaters for a two-day, sing-along spectacle." [End quote]

When the Lucas Museum opens next year, different factions in the world of arts and culture will be going either, "huh?!" or lining up at the front door. Or ongoing cases of "treacle" versus "even my kid can do that!"

Similarly, LACMA's only Van Gogh is going to be a case of either "How nice!!" or "okay, that's better than nothing."
