Broad Expansion Begins

The Broad's expansion has begun with removal of fiberglass-reinforced concrete panels on the building's west side. Interior space near the affected wall has been deinstalled and closed to visitors. The expansion is expected to open in 2028.

By the standards of over 20-30 years ago, the Broad wasn't necessarily too modest in size. But not today. In the 2020s, museums throughout the world have really upped the ante.

Expectations in general are turned way up, people travel way more, everyone is into so-called experiences. The public is now more and more blase.

The new massive Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo is the most recent big-time museum. The always gargantuan Louvre has long been one of the original standard bearers.

However, even by the standards of the 1960s-80s, MOCA across Grand Ave was noticeably small. If the Broad hadn't come around in the 2nd decade of the 21st century, MOCA would seem even more lost in the shuffle.

^ The former director several months ago departed too. I wonder if its budgetary issues? LACMA certainly is under the gun of more money flowing out than in.

However, just as the preferences of a Micheal Govan affect the way a museum is managed, the same must be also true of George Lucas.

Govan is too much into cheap-o contemporary art exhibits, while I hope Lucas isn't too much into Kinkade-Hallmark-type displays. Or from one extreme to the other.

The Lucas's former director and curator seemed like they were in the former camp more than the latter.

Meanwhile, Cairo's new Grand Egyptian Museum says, "hold my beer," while the Louvre-Metropolitan-National Gallery (etc) sort of guffaw.
