ICE Detains Man in "New American Gothic"

Hyperallergic reports that ICE agents have detained Criselda Vasquez's father, best known as a model for Vasquez's painting New American Gothic. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art bought the painting in 2021 and has used it extensively in publicity.

Ironically, the painting's narrative has now taken a new twist that will likely dominate future discussions of it. It's still unclear how the story ends. The Vasquez family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover lost wages and legal expenses.

^ California has taken some big hits. LA's entertainment industry is reportedly witnessing a slowdown right now that's as extreme as during Covid 2020.

I watched a video just posted by a British couple of their travel to LA. They were turned off by Hollywood Blvd (they judged it as dirty and desolate) and didn't seem too happy about the area around the Broad Museum.

I'm hearing things aren't too ideal in places like London too. Also other cities and countries. Shanghai, China is supposedly hollowing out.

It's as though the world is still affected by Covid-era blahs.

The cafe at LACMA is going to be a collaboration with Erewhon. Museum food is always expensive but usually a museum cafe is the option everyone takes when they don't want to spend the money at the restaurant. Still, it seems really out-of-touch to partner with a satirically expensive brand that sells $22 smoothies.
