Kehinde Wiley in San Diego

Kehinde Wiley, Equestrian Portrait of Prince Tommaso of Savoy-Carignan, 2015. Collection of Jeanne and Dennis Easel

San Diego's Timken Museum is showing Kehinde Wiley's Equestrian Portrait of Prince Tommaso of Savoy-Carignan, a loan (through May 2024) from collectors Jeanne and Dennis Masel. The couple lent the painting to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in 2019.

The portrait is based on a van Dyck, so the Timken (which is all older European and American art) is showing it adjacent to their van Dyck, Mary Villiers, Lady Herbert of Shurland

Prince Tommaso is part of Wiley's "Rumors of War" series, as is the large bronze sculpture planned for L.A.'s Destination Crenshaw.
