Coming This Month: Joan Brown in OC; Sikh Art at UCLA
Joan Brown, The Night Before the Alcatraz Swim, 1975. GUC Collection (c) Estate of Joan Brown |
The Orange County Museum of Art will present a condensed version of last year's Joan Brown show at SFMOMA. "Joan Brown" (Jan. 26–June 2, 2024) will include over 40 paintings and sculptures, about half the size of the original. As with many women artists of the early Feminist era, Brown's art was dismissed as "unserious" and is now receiving renewed attention.
Comments
The flooring reminds me of "The Splash" by David Hockney (1966).
Now I know where the British artist Richard Woods got his idea for his signature painted interiors...Joan Brown's walls and ceiling in the painting are very cool.
The woman's slacks are a triumph.
However, the woman's face is the only element that doesn't make a compelling case, for indifference or for ennui.
