Today the Broad held a groundbreaking ceremony for its expansion, expected to open in 2028, in time for the Olympics. As announced last year, the Diller Scofidio + Renfro addition will increase gallery space about 70 percent and add outdoor spaces. More on the project here

I still don't get what's going to be done - if anything - to the parking garage's current roof. Since 2015, it has been a barren concrete slab. The new galleries will be above it, but the pad holding them up will be used for what? Just a covered concrete patio? If so, why couldn't it have been turned into an enclosed space?

Part of it will be enclosed. The rest will form a terrace around the first floor of the expansion. See the renderings at the architect's website, Diller Scofidio & Renfro.

^ It had better be because the open area (currently the roof of the parking structure) is less than 1/3 the width of the original building. So if the extension is just 2 levels of interior space, that would give the add-on only around a total of 2/3rd the square footage of just one floor of the original building.

The only renderings I've seen of the new addition seem ambiguous as to how the pad level will be designed. Huge sheets of glass windows/walls seem to be implied in the graphics. But the only thing that looks obvious is that pylons will be holding up the addition, sort of smaller versions of the ones designed for the unfinished Geffen or Lucas building.

At the groundbreaking, the architect showed a drawing with the gallery areas designated. The first floor of the expansion is divided into two areas -- a gallery behind glass walls (about two-thirds of the existing roof slab) and a smaller entry courtyard (open to outside). No ambiguity now.
