Burn, Baby, Burn
For several weeks, the rumor mill has claimed that LACMA was trying to scrape together funds to buy Matta's Burn, Baby, Burn, a 32-feet-wide painting inspired by the Watts Riots. This weekend, the 2009 Collectors Council acquired the work, the museum's Unframed blog is reporting. The purchase becomes the museum's only Matta painting and (apparently) its biggest painting, being over half again the width of Robert Motherwell's Elegy to the Spanish Republic 100. The surprisingly generous Collectors Committee also purchased a 117-piece collection of vintage Kuba textiles.
