The Huntington's new gallery for Chinese art, the Studio for Lodging the Mind (
寓意齋), will open August 28, 2021. Intended to connect the Chinese garden and the Huntington's Anglo-American collections, the 1720-sf studio has been designed for small loan exhibitions of Chinese ink works.
The initial show, "A Garden of Words: The Calligraphy of Liu Fang Yuan," will feature handscrolls of 21 contemporary calligraphy artists who designed the Huntington garden's stone inscriptions. Artists include Wan-go H.C. Weng, Grace Chu, Fu Shen, and Terry Yuan. The works will be shown in two rotations, from Aug. 28 to Dec. 13, 2021, and Jan. 29 to May 16, 2022.
