Will Rogers Home, Bunny Museum Burn to Ground

It's one small index of the devastation wrought by the Los Angeles wildfires: Yesterday two museums burned to the ground. They were the house museum of humorist and movie star Will Rogers (1879-1935) in Pacific Palisades and the Bunny Museum in Altadena, invariably featured in lists of quirky L.A. attractions. It's reported that the former's horses and the latter's rabbits (and cats) were saved.

Many large museums are closed out of safety concerns. They include LACMA, MOCA Grand Ave., the Broad, both Getty sites, the Hammer, the Norton Simon Museum, and the Huntington. The Los Angeles Zoo and Griffith Planetarium are closed as well. Policies are changing day by day, and in many cases, closures extend through next week.

Very sad to hear about the destruction of the Will Rogers House. I toured it a few times as a child; it was a wonderful slice of a bygone California. The Bidwell Mansion in Northern California, and also a state park, burned earlier this year. If ever the state has the money, I hope they find some to protect these historic structures from fires so we don’t lose more of our heritage in the future.
