MOCA Is Free

Starting Saturday MOCA will offer free admission, through the next five years at least. It's courtesy of MOCA Board President Carolyn Clark Powers.

Many American museums have gone free in recent years. But when you look at the highest-profile contemporary and modern art museums, it's a different story. MoMA, the Whitney, and SFMOMA charge a steep $25. The New Museum (NY) is $18; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is $16; Boston ICA is $15.

Los Angeles is now unique in having three major contemporary museums—MOCA, the Broad, the Hammer—with free admission.

This should help with cross-circulation between MOCA and the Broad on Grand Ave. Even more so since the Isozaki building is so modest in size, that a visitor - even more so if he or she has paid to enter - comes away with a feeling of, "is that all there is?"

Will be interesting to see the way the Lucas museum is either similar or dissimilar in causing that vague sense of dissatisfaction.
