When Picasso Met Ingres

Jean-Auguste-Dominque Ingres, Madame Moitessier, 1856. National Gallery, London. Pablo Picasso, Woman with a Book, 1932. Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena.

The Norton Simon Museum and the National Gallery, London, are collaborating on a focus exhibition that will pair Picasso's Woman with a Book with the painting that inspired it, Ingres' 1856 portrait of Madame Moitessier. Picasso saw the Ingres painting in 1921 and adapted the pose for a 1932 picture of his mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter.

"Picasso Ingres: Face to Face" opens in London in summer 2022 and will appear at the Norton Simon Oct. 21, 2022 to Jan. 30, 2023.
