LACMA Will Celebrate the "City of Cinema" (and It's Not L.A.)

Nadar, Pierrot the Photographer, 1854

An exhibition currently at the Musée d'Orsay, "Enfin le cinéma!" will appear at LACMA next spring. Under the title "City of Cinema: Paris 1850–1907," it will explore the evolution of urban high and low culture via pioneering French film and contemporaneous paintings, photographs, sculpture, and posters. Artists range from the Lumière Brothers and George Méliès to Jean-Léon Gérôme, Claude Monet, Gustave Caillebotte, Berthe Morisot, Auguste Rodin, and Pierre Bonnard.

The show seems to announce that film still has a place in LACMA's exhibition program now that the Academy Museum is open.

"City of Cinema" runs Feb. 20 to July 10, 2022, in the Resnick Pavilion.
