Refreshed Adam and Eve to Debut at Getty

Lucas Cranach the Elder, Adam and Eve, about 1530 (pre-conservation image). Norton Simon Museum

Lucas Cranach the Elder's Adam and Eve have been off view at the Norton Simon Museum for a years-long conservation treatment at the Getty. The panels will be displayed in the Getty Center's Renaissance galleries Jan. 23 to Apr. 21, 2024, before being returned to Pasadena.

Adam and Eve's tumultuous history includes a long court battle for their restitution by Marei von Saher, an heir of Amsterdam art dealer Jacques Goudstikker. In 2018 a Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals ruling upheld the NSM's title to the paintings. There are explainers herehere, and (on the NSM site) here.
