Getty, Skirball Centers Now in Evacuation Zone

Getty Center steps in June 2024

Despite some recent progress in fighting the Palisades fire, flames have moved to the east. Authorities have expanded the mandatory evacuation zone to encompass both the Getty Center and the Skirball Cultural Center. The institutions are closed until further notice.

The Skirball building (by Moshe Safdie) is made of concrete, steel, and pink granite, in part to protect collections from the site's wildfires. Richard Meier's Getty Center is faced in travertine and incorporates various technologies for fire resistance.

Needless to say, no one likes to see such measures tested. The Palisades fire has now burned over 35 square miles, an area larger than Manhattan.

This is horrifying. I saw a flyover by CNN this morning of the Getty Villa. Houses directly abutting the property were destroyed, and they appeared to my untrained eye to be perhaps 100 yards or less from the museum's outdoor collonade.
Manhattan is 22.6 sq. miles, and these fires may yet cover 2 Manhattans, with today's winds set to pick up.
Let us hope the Getty's prescient fire-prevention strategy holds to avert disaster.
