Disney Show Is Coming to Huntington

The Walt Disney exhibition that appeared at the Metropolitan Museum and is now at the Wallace Collection, London, will make a third stop at the Huntington. "Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French Decorative Arts" combines Rococo furniture with concept art for Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast. The exhibition will open in the Huntington's Boone Gallery Dec. 10, 2022, and run through Mar. 27, 2023.

"I make pictures for entertainment," Walt Disney once said, "and the professors tell me what they mean."

Also on the Huntington's schedule is "Gee's Bend: Shared Legacy," a showing of two recently acquired quilts and a set of color etchings by artists of the Gee's Bend collective. It will run in two rotations for nearly a year starting Sep. 17, 2022, in the Scott Galleries of American Art.

As possibly with the future Lucas Museum or the future Zumthor overpass, I bet the Disney-themed exhibit will be somewhat popular with the public, with people into selfie moments and TikTok interests.

After mulling over the nature of the Louvre (sort of a high-brow cultural version of Disney World), I now have a somewhat different take on aspects of pop culture and, in turn, museums that have the tone of a made-for-the-masses theme park. Call it Met Land on 5th Avenue or the Pei Pyramid at Louvre World.
