Hammer Collects

Jonas Wood, Brian and Ana, 2014. Shown in "Together in Time: Selections from the Hammer Contemporary Collection"

The Hammer's celebration/interrogation of its contemporary collection continues. New works have been rotated into "Together in Time: Selections from the Hammer Contemporary Collection" (closing Aug. 20, 2023), among them paintings by Jonas Wood and Laura Owens and a large, recently acquired collage by Rashid Johnson. A separate exhibition, "Ecstatic: Selections from the Hammer Contemporary Collection" (through Aug. 27,  2023), treats sculpture and drawing, two media that have been crucial to many L.A. artists and to the Hammer's exhibition program.

Ishi Glinsky, Coral vs. King Snake Jacket, 2019
Ishi Glinsky's Coral vs. King Snake Jacket looms above an array of sculpture, many being shown for the first time. Glinksy will be one of the artists in "Made in L.A. 2023," opening Oct. 1.

Analia Saban, Fitted Bed Sheet, 2011
Amalia Saban finds a metaphor for the paragone in a fitted bed sheet. Anyone who's ever tried to fold one will get it. Saban used an actual sheet to create a silicone mold for acrylic paint. The acrylic cast was attached to canvas, a sculpture that is also a burlesque of a painting.
Liz Craft, Hairy Guy (with flower basket), 2005. Gift of David Hoberman
Lauren Halsey, Eastsidetopia, 2019. Promised gift of Jarl and Pamela Mohn
It's a big summer for Lauren Halsey. Her Met commission, an Egyptian/South Central temple overlooking Central Park, draws on a hieroglyphic structure shown at the Hammer in "Made in LA 2018." Halsey won that year's Mohn Award, and Eastsidetopia is a promised gift of the Mohns.
