Jesse Homer French, City at Rest, 2022. Included in the Hammer Museum's "Made in LA 2023: Acts of Living" |
Jesse Homer French began painting cemeteries in the 1970s, after her 6-year-old daughter died. The 2021 death of her husband Robin French led to a new group of paintings of graveyards and funerals. Each is a visionary diagram of the living, the dead, and the thin brown line of topsoil separating them.
Long admired by Ed Ruscha and Billy Al Bengston, Homer French is only now receiving wide attention. She was featured in the 2021 Venice Biennale and now, in the Hammer's "Made in LA 2023: Acts of Living."
