Destination Crenshaw Update

Sketch of Anthony "Toons One" Martin's Hey Young World

Like most museumesque projects, Destination Crenshaw has missed a few deadlines. Last July it was announced that the outdoor art space would open Feb. 24, 2024. That passed without any artworks installed. The latest word is that the inaugural art commissions will be unveiled as ready, will all hoped to be in place by the end of 2024.

The first completed artwork is expected to be Hey Young World, a mural by street artist Anthony "Toons One" Martin. To be completed this spring, it is at the corner of 57th St. and Crenshaw Blvd.

Billed as "the largest Black public art project in the U.S.," Destination Crenshaw will include a equestrian statue by Kehinde Wiley and commissioned pieces by Charles Dickson, Melvin Edwards, Maren Hassinger, Artis Lane, Alison Saar, Brenna Youngblood, and many others.

Shame that it's taking so long, but at least we finally have an update! By the way, California African American Museum in Expo Park has been closed due to 'storm damage' since August of last year. No word on when they're going to re-open or why the reopening is taking so long (they issued a vague statement at the start of February saying they'd have an opening date soon, but it's been radio silence since then). It's concerning for several reasons, but LA's presentation of the Simone Leigh exhibition is scheduled to open this month at both LACMA and CAAM. No word if CAAM will be open in time for the show, or if they'll even be presenting it as planned. This seems worth looking into
