The Marciano Art Foundation has launched an expanded website
, including images of 33 "collection highlights" and a list of artists in the still little-known collection
An obvious question is how the Marciano collection differs from the Broad's. As Maurice Marciano said, "We don't need another MOCA or Broad or Hammer Museum."
Here's my quick breakdown. Nearly all of the Marciano works shown on the website were made in the past decade. They are split between well-known mid-career artists and younger ones. Of 310 artists represented in the Marciano collection, 39 are also collected by the Broad. This includes, yes, Jeff Koons and also such artists as El Anatsui, Tauba Auerbach, Mark Bradford, George Condo, Mike Kelley, Mark Grotjahn, Damien Hirst, Thomas Houseago, Barbara Kruger, Yayoi Kusama, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, Glenn Ligon, Goshka Macuga, Takashi Murakami, Albert Oehlen, Catherine Opie, Richard Prince, Sterling Ruby, Rudolf Stingel, and Christopher Wool.
There is even (at least) one work that the Marciano and the Broad both own: Takashi Murakami's Oval Buddha Silver
(2008). It's an edition of 10.
Most (271 out of 310) of the artists in the Marciano collection are not the Broad collection. Most of the Broad's artists (132 out of 171) are not in the Marciano. Many of the Marciano-only artists are relatively lesser known, but this group also includes such well-known names as Thomas Demand, Tracy Emin, David Hammons, Paul McCarthy, Christian Marclay, Marilyn Minter, Laura Owens, Frances Stark, Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch, Lawrence Weiner, and Ai Weiwei. I'm not sure I see much pattern, but overall the Marciano seems more open to emerging L.A. artists than the Broad is.
Of course, it's not about ticking off names on a list. The Marciano has a Mike Kelley Kandor sculpture (2010, above), something not found at any other local institution.
Marciano ticketing will be available through the website May 1
. The Marciano opens May 25, and the Foundation will reimburse transportation costs for Los Angeles County Public School visits
