Judithe Hernández at MoLAA
Los Four have been commanding institutional attention with recent exhibitions devoted to Frank Romero and Carlos Almaraz. Next up is Judithe Hernández, cinco of Los Four, and its only female. Opening tomorrow at the Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, is "Judithe Hernández: A Dream Is the Shadow Is the Shadow of Something Real" (Aug. 11–Feb. 17, 2019). Primarily a show of recent pastels, it includes a monumental mixed-media painting that MoLAA has acquired for its collection: Les Demoiselles d'Barrio (2013). Hernández's female-gaze take on Picasso replaces the African mask with those of Mexican luchadores.
