Judithe Hernández at MoLAA

Los Four have been commanding institutional attention with recent exhibitions devoted to Frank Romero and Carlos Almaraz. Next up is Judithe Hernández, cinco of Los Four, and its only female. Opening tomorrow at the Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, is "Judithe Hernández: A Dream Is the Shadow Is the Shadow of Something Real" (Aug. 11–Feb. 17, 2019). Primarily a show of recent pastels, it includes a monumental mixed-media painting that MoLAA has acquired for its collection: Les Demoiselles d'Barrio (2013). Hernández's female-gaze take on Picasso replaces the African mask with those of Mexican luchadores.

Thank you for mentioning my solo exhibition at MOLAA. However, I would like to correct one error in the description. I was not the 5th "unofficial" member of Los Four. I was the 5th and only other artist who was made a member of the collective. We never changed the name because we thought there might be other artists added and changing the name would become confusing. Years ago, a historian erroneously described my status in Los Four as unofficial and unfortunately the error keeps getting repeated. Although, the mischaracterization seems harmless, the reason I have begun to respond when I see it is because so many artists who are women of color have had their careers marginalized or erased.

Best regards, Judithe Hernández
Thanks for the correction—have fixed.
