New Plan Would Keep Mayme Clayton Library in Culver City

Mayme A. Clayton
The Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum was evicted from its longtime Culver City home this summer. Since then the fate of its 2 million-item collection of African American history has been up in the air. Clayton was a UCLA librarian who lobbied for that institution to collect African American material. UCLA wasn't much interested, so Clayton  took early retirement and assembled her own collection on a shoestring budget. The trove includes some 800 early black films.

A new plan, developed by leaders of the Wende Museum, the Clayton, and other Culver City non-profits, would create a multipurpose Creative Community Center at 10858 Culver Blvd. The site would have space for the Clayton, keeping its resources accessible to school groups, researchers, and the public.

The City Council will hold a public hearing on the idea tonight. Those in attendance will be able to vote digitally. If you'd like to hear more about the plan and/or want to keep the Clayton Library in Culver City, you can have an outsized impact by attending. The meeting is 6 to 9:30 PM, Sep. 24, at the Senior Center, 4095 Overland Ave., Culver City.
