This August LACMA will open the first solo museum exhibition of Venezuela-born ceramic artist Magdalena Suarez Frimkess. Sometimes described as an artist's artist, she and husband Michael Frimkess came to wider attention with the 2014 Hammer biennial. The LACMA show will connect Suarez Frimkess' art to the California ceramics tradition and will include a selection of collaborative works made with her husband.

"Magdalena Suarez Frimkess: The Finest Disregard" will run Aug. 18, 2024, to Jan. 5, 2025.

Suarez may be a perfectly good artist, but "Finest Disregard" seems like another one of those shows that illustrates why LACMA is becoming more of a contemporary art museum---regardless of, "and not a very good one at that." Given the Hammer, MOCA, the Broad, such exhibits in mid-Wilshire still come off conceptually, politically, thematically or symbolically as too much, same 'ol, same 'ol.

Thank God for the Getty and Huntington. And a shout out to the Simon.

As for the future Lucas, I hope its staff doesn't end up favoring another version of, "and not a very good one at that."

All of the LA museums have peculiar interests.
The Getty and Huntington are no better than LACMA.

LACMA would operate more like the Met if its audience were more like the Met's audience. You have only yourself to blame.
