Do-Ho Suh is having a moment in Southern California. Suh was featured in "Your Bright Future," and another of his works, Gate, recently went on view in LACMA's Korean galleries. Now UC San Diego is planning a new Suh commission, Fallen Star, for its acclaimed Stuart Collection of environmental sculpture. Fallen Star will consist of a suburban house cantilevered atop the Jacobs School of Engineering. Visitors will be able to enter the house and its garden.
The university's write-up evokes The Wizard of Oz — "a small house which has been picked up by some mysterious force (perhaps a tornado) and 'landed' seven stories up." Given the precarious perch, another cinematic parallel is Anjanette Comer's condemned house atop the canyon in The Loved One (1965).
