Archive of Glorious Food to GRI

Food author and educator Anne Willan has donated her gastronomy collection to the Getty Research Institute and established a series of research grants in honor of her late husband Mark Cherniavsky. The collection consists of hundreds of rare cookbooks, manuscripts, and prints documenting food preparation and display from the 15th to the 19th century. Willan and Cherniavksy lent to and consulted on "The Edible Monument," a popular 2015 GRI show that traveled to the Detroit Institute of the Arts.

The collection augments the GRI's holdings in visual culture outside the usual scope of art museums, from fireworks to horticulture. Shown is a Costume of the Boilermaker by Nicolas I de Larmessin, c. 1690s.
